Trimming is amongst the many procedures to keep the lawn looking neat and healthy. True, it isn’t simple to achieve the perfectly manicured lawn (that looks straight out of the movie Edward Scissorhands). But with the right lawn solution, attaining that picture-perfect lawn won’t be out of the way.
If you’ve got the right techniques up your sleeve, you’ll be able to attain a lawn that’s neatly trimmed with no space for weeds. Here we’ll be sharing a few secrets for a perfectly manicured lawn.
Don’t cut off over a third of the grass blade
While it’s tempting to mow your lawn very short to lengthen the time of its growth before the next mowing session, this can stress your grass out and pave the way for the growth of weeds.
To keep your grass in good health, keep your lawn fairly tall—be sure not to cut off over one-third of the grass blade, even if this means mowing more frequently.
Mow when grass is dry
Mowing or cutting a wet lawn always gets icky as wet grass will stick to your garden shears or clog your lawnmower. You also don’t want pieces of wet grass that clump everywhere.
Cutting wet grass also increases the likelihood of uneven cutting as the clippings will clump in different areas and not spread equally.
Conversely, it isn’t good to mow in drought as this can put a lot of stress to the grass, making it hard for it to recover.
Keep your blade sharp
Whether it be garden shears or a mower, sharp blades are the way to go if you want a lawn that’s evenly trimmed. Cutting with dull blades will only add unsightly ragged edges to your grass.
To achieve this, sharpen or replace the blades every time it displays signs of wear. If you can’t commit to sharpening or replacing your blades every now and then, you can choose to do it at least once per mowing season.
You should also look out for stones and thick branches among other solid matter that can wreak havoc on your blades.
Leave clippings on the lawn
Leaving grass clippings on the lawn may seem counterproductive as you are allowing all the old, snipped grass to linger in your supposedly neat lawn. However, this step is, in fact, ideal because these contain nutrients and moisture that will benefit the growing grass beneath.
Make sure that this is done properly since clumps of grass clippings will only suffocate your new grass. This won’t be a problem if you don’t cut off over one-third of the grass blade.
Mind the spots where your dog frequents
The appearance of your lawn gives away if there are dogs in your household. To maintain your lawn in excellent shape, encourage your dog to only use one spot for potty. Make sure that you also assign a certain area where your dog can frolic around to reduce the wear and tear of your whole yard.
If training your dog is a farfetched option, establish the areas it can’t set foot in and fence these areas off. Of course, this should be less of a problem if you chose a hardy grass variety, like Sir Walter Buffalo, at the outset.
