Gardening: Top 6 tips for an allergy-free garden

The sweet smell of Spring brings new life to plants. That’s why gardening is something people enjoy during this season.

But for others, the pollen that Spring brings is dreadful. And you might think that having a beautiful garden is impossible.

With careful and responsible gardening, creating the garden of your dreams is possible. Here are some tips to help you achieve that!

Know when to garden

There are different pollen types released at different times of the year. So, it’s best to avoid gardening when they’re highest in each season.

During Spring, pollen counts are typically at their highest in the afternoon. So, it’s best to garden in the morning and evening.

Go for flowering plants

These are plants that are pollinated by insects. Their pollen grains are too big for the wind therefore reducing the chances of triggering your allergy.

Furthermore, flowering plants have large and bright flowers. Some examples of these are Begonia, Camellia, Lavender, Jasmine, Cordyline and more.

Choose your lawn wisely

You might think that having a lush lawn will trigger allergies. However, there are turf varieties that release little to no pollen.

Some varieties include Buffalo grass and St. Augustine Grass. Make sure to buy from trusted turf suppliers to guarantee that you’re getting something low allergenic.

One way to make sure that your lawn won’t spread pollen is to mow it regularly to inhibit seeds.

Opt for female plants

This might sound a little bit strange, but female plants produce less pollen than their male counterparts.

For example, conifers have a male and female form. For a safer and allergy-friendly choice, opt for the female tree.

Avoid chemical fertilisers and sprays

Chemical substances such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides can increase hypersensitivity to pollen. Go for alternatives like natural and organic gardening products.

Wear the right clothes

When gardening, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect your arms and legs. For additional safety, a hat and sunglasses will also come in handy.

Having an allergy-free garden doesn’t mean you don’t get to enjoy or relax in a beautiful outdoor living space. All you need to do is be responsible and careful in your gardening and plant options.
