Steps to combat bindii infestation on your turf

Bindii is a pain in the neck for turf owners. They’re an invasive plant species that grow in dry environments. And once their flowers bloom, they bear fruit with two or four spines that are sharp.

Not only can they hurt you, they can also puncture the tyres of your lawn mower and bicycle. If your turf is badly infested, flipflops won’t save your feet from these noxious weeds. Once they’ve pierced their victim, it also leaves a hole somewhat larger than that of a pin.

So, before your turf turns into a spiny greenscape, here are steps on how to combat bindii on your turf:

Use selective herbicide

These are herbicides that are harmless to other plants yet deadly to some. There are different types of herbicides for different kinds of weed. Choosing the wrong herbicide will do considerable damage to your turf. So, make sure you have the right one before spraying away. This is the most effective solution to bindii infestation.

Manual removal

With the use of a sharp knife, you can manually pull out bindii that haven’t bloomed yet. That way, you won’t get pricked by its nutlets when doing so. Although it can be quite tedious, it’s still an effective way in preventing bindii infestation. Make sure you dig up their roots to keep them from growing back.

If you have a lawn mower, adjust its height higher. With this, the grass will dominate the growth of bindii and will keep them from spreading on your lawn.

Boiling water

Another cost-free way to combat bindii infestation is by using boiling water. Just bring water to a boil and carefully pour on the bindii. Make sure you pour it exclusively on the bindii’s root or else, other plants around it may die as well.

These are just a few simple steps on the prevention of these noxious weeds. If bindii still plagues your lawn, it may be time to get a turf variety that’s weed resistant. Invest on a DNA certified turf, much like Sir Walter Buffalo turf for a price that’s affordable.
