5 things that you’ll need when laying instant turf

Laying instant turf might seem easy at first glance but in reality, it takes heaps of preparation before ordering rolls of turf.

The process of laying instant turf is somehow different from the usual process of gardening. In gardening, you just dig, apply fertilizer, plant the seeds and—voila! You’re done.

Let’s look at the five things you’ll need when laying your instant turf.

Rake

Before laying your instant turf, the topsoil should be clear of weeds and any other debris that’ll hinder its growth and lifespan. Rakes are used to level the soil as well as to avoid an uneven turf once laid down.

Granulated fertiliser

Once the soil is raked evenly, it’s highly recommended to sprinkle fertiliser on the entire soil. The fertiliser will help the turf get accustomed to the ground and get it off to a great start.

Remember to moderately sprinkle fertiliser because too much will kill your turf’s roots. After distributing the granules, water the ground to promote incorporation.

Normally, stores that sell turf supplies provide one for free.

Sharp knife or secateurs

Since instant turfs are bought per square metre, you are bound to make a few adjustments such as cutting off a portion for it to fit in. A sharp knife or a pair of secateurs will do the trick.

Reminder: Don’t tear off portions of the turf because it’ll ruin their root system!

Turf laying boards

Fortunately, these boards aren’t made of anything special. These are just ordinary planks of wood that you place on top of your turf for you (or your landscapers) to step on. Directly stepping on turf will damage it—or even kill it!

You can either buy one for a low price or just grab any old cupboard doors lying around.

Water sprinkler or hose

Once you’ve laid your instant turf, experts in lawn solutions highly suggest the immediate watering of the lawn. That way, your turf will settle in quickly since you’ll be watering them a lot.

A sprinkler can cut down your watering time, but it’s less effective than watering with a hose.

These are the tools you’ll be using when laying instant turf. If it’s your first time, you can always borrow tools from your neighbour but be sure to buy your own eventually since you’ll be using these tools a lot in maintaining your turf.

If you’re having trouble, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from professionals!
