Why should I choose Winter Green Couch for my garden?

Australia doesn’t do winter in a true sense. None of our capitals – not even Hobart – experience proper snow during the coldest time of the year, and indeed much of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia don’t have a recognisable winter at all.
When choosing a turf to lay in their backyards, most Australians will likely go for something that is drought tolerant and that loves the sun. And when they see the name ‘Winter Green Couch’ when shopping for turf supplies in Sydney they probably assume that this variety won’t suit their needs. This assumption, however, couldn’t be further from the truth.
What’s in a name?
Winter green couch is actually a warm season lawn – i.e. one that thrives in hot conditions. It loves full sun, is incredibly drought tolerant and has an innate ability to repair itself.
In truth, the only conditions that winter green struggles in are those that occur in winter. The limited sunlight and frosty mornings that some parts of Australia experience from May to August can serve to brown off and even kill this beautiful turf.
That said, the reason that winter green earnt its name is that despite being a warm season lawn that doesn’t particularly like the cold, it is better than most at retaining its beautiful green colour during this period. If you’re committed to buying a couch grass and live in an area that experiences cool winters (places like Southern WA, SA and Northern Victoria), winter green can prove to be the perfect choice.
The other benefits
So we know that winter green is good at retaining its colour over winter, is super resistant to drought (thanks to a deep root system), and loves to be exposed to the sun. But what other benefits does this turf bring to the table?
By choosing winter green you’ll get a grass that:
Grows and spreads densely over an area
Grows in a variety of soil types
Stands up to wear and tear
Repairs itself quickly
Is soft to the touch
