When should I mow my Sir Walter Buffalo?

Sure, Sir Water buffalo is one of the hardiest and lowest maintenance grasses available in Australia – that’s why it’s been Australia’s favourite grass for almost 20 years. But these features don’t mean that you, as a Sir Buffalo owner, can simply set it and forget it. Like any plant, to get the very best out of your Sir Walter you need to tend to it. And one of the simplest ways to get it looking its best is to give it a regular mow.

But how do you mow Sir Walter? And when should you mow it? Here is all that you need to know about giving your Sir Walter a fresh new haircut.

Firstly let’s look at the height. Sir Walter is a dense, spongy grass, perfect for children (and indeed adults) to play on. The height at which you mow should help to exacerbate this sponginess, and offer the lawn the greatest opportunity to grow dense and thick.

It’s recommended that you mow your Sir Walter to a height of 40-60mm. When weather is at its extremes – in the heat of summer or the chill of winter – it’s recommended that you allow your Sir Walter to grow out a little. This will protect the roots from the frost or the intense sun.

The rule for Sir Walter buffalo, and indeed for any grass, is that you never want to take off more than one-third of the grass blade at any one time. This will mean that cutting to a height of 40-60mm could result in you getting out the mower relatively regularly.

Sir Walter grows quickest in the autumn, when the sun is plentiful and the soil is warm. This peak growing period will likely require you to be mowing every weekend in order to stick to the one-third rule. Through the rest of the year you may only need to mow fortnightly, or even once every three weeks in the dead of winter (when it’s recommended that you grow the grass out a little anyway).

So there you have it – mowing your Sir Walter turf like a professional isn’t that complicated at all!
